"The ROOT is BITTER, but the FRUIT IS SWEET" "Dreams
Finally Achieved" *******************
*********** *****
There lived a "Nomad Couple" in the barrio of Macalang
and Bayambang named Emilio S. Mayo & Generosa M. Madarang. The husband is a well educated proud man and a son of a village
tycon. His wife was a popular barter, a daughter of an uneducated farmer of the neighboring village. They suffered tyrant
struggle and adversities in life with their 13 children (1 died at early age) due to extreme poverty. Since existence, the
whole family has labored hard next to slavery in exchange of food and education.
The sequencial inception of their
siblings according to heirarchy is as follows: NOTE: Nicknames were given by LUZ, the eldest
LUZ, nickname
"Lusak by her husband Dionisio" MARGARITA, nickname "Gal or Margot" JOSE, nickname "Joe" (Died at early age) JUSTINA,
nickname "Tin & Terya" now Justin ARNULFO, nickname "Arnol, Oppong & Reting" LEONILA, nickname "Petra" now
Lee ROMULO, nickname "Romy, Mulo & Singkol" LOURDES, nickname "Ludy or Lud" NELSON, nickname "Dabog &
Kantaw" now HUNTER (The CLAN's Blacksheep) ELVIRA, nickname "Sylvia & Berad" now Tiger REBECCA, nickname "Beck
& Batingga" FERDINAND, nickname "Ernan or Puldo" HELEN, nickname "Bunso" the Edek
For many years, they
were "NOMADS" relocated from place to place as tenants tending fish ponds, farm lands, and other property belongings of the
husband's relatives. The family stayed in a HUT made of bamboo, cogon grass, and coconut leaves that sheltered and bonded
them just like a honeybee hive. Their children were happy and contented knowing that this cycle of life is their norm.
Everyone tried his/her very best to excel in wide range
of every scholastic events that made the couple so proud just like treasures that they ever owned. Most of the brothers and
sisters took honors in schools. Unending praises exploded at their favor but criticism over ruled by many despite of
their complishments. LUZ, the eldest achieved her degree, gainfully employed, and started her own family. Avid supporter to
the youngs.
As they progressively approached college, all of their belongings were deminished to finance the unaffordable
venture. "Emilio," the father, has tried many attempts in procuring money to finance his children's expenses but luck did
not give way. He even joined mining industry which later failed. He reverted back to go fishing being his best known asset
coupled with his wife Generosa's barter and baking skills which sustained the motion that eventually led to Margarita's nearing
completion in college
On October 9, 1972, devastation hit the family due to tragic death of their dearest mother "Generosa,
better known as "INING" who suffered from acute diabetes that was aggrevated by a rabid dog's bite. She laid in
bed for 3 weeks leading to her utmost destiny. The adorable family was drastically torn apart. Schoolastic engagements
ceased. Dreams were totally shattered and hopes were in vain. Pursuing education became next to impossible.
The family began to battle for un-enduring unity.
Emilio was endulged to alcoholism, elder children served as domestic
helpers to help sustain the family, some teenagers went astray, and young ones were left at home. Constant outcry
to each and everyone each day just to have something to eat especially to relatives from both parents' party but assistance
was just so scarce like a lunar eclipse.
Harship is overwhelming. Complete agony is at hand. No
one would risk to lend any assistance due to lack property for collaterals. Raged, blame, hatred, and constant criticism
continuously reigned against Emilo's "Outcasted Children." Only grace of God, his devine mercy, and work of miracles
can only save these hopeful and abandoned children.
Late 1972, Arnulfo secured an employment as the Executive
Secretary to the Provincial Governor of Pangasinan, "VIC Millora" at the Capitol Building in Lingayen, Pangasinan. He solely
supports his own venture as a Law Student in the University of Pangasinan and later transferred to the MLQU, Manila.
In 1973 healing and acceptance process of the lost mother served as motivation and inspiration to survive, pushed
everyone. It did not take very long when the NorthWind diverted its path for the hopeless family. During early summer of 1974,
Arnulfo, the eldest son, strived to join the U.S Navy through his efforts, he succeeded and lifted the CLAN to its gradual
economic recovery. Perserverance, faith, devotion, and hope has brought the family together. Educational plans resumed.
The Lost dream is regained. Financial support were pledged and delivered by "Arnol," the family's root and a saver.
Margarita
graduated from college, gained her employment as a High School Educator, and acted as the head of the household. Justina got
married and returned home with a husband and two children. She backfilled the gap in providing guidance and morale support
to the youngs. The family regained confidence.
In 1974, Emilio was petitioned by her dear mother the late "Margarita
Sahagun, better known as Titay" to join her in Guam. Romulo, Rebecca, and Helen were taken along. The 4 members of the
CLAN lived in good faith through U.S. food stamps and the mercy of some friends and other relatives.
Constant pain
and struggle once again repeated its path. Becky and Helen served as domestic helpers. Romy joined his brother Arnol
in the Navy and requested Nelson in migrating to Guam which later ended in enlisting with the United States Army which transformed
the infamous "Blacksheep" into a civilized citizen.
After many years of the CLAN's struggle, they attained success
that is unimaginable and can only be surpassed by few. Through their hard work, dedication, support to each other, and
God's Amazing Grace, Emilo's sons and daughters became the talk of the town. They now serve as legendary role models
and Living Facts as the late Mr. Alberto Taguian described them going from "RAGS TO RICHES."
In 1995 Emilio returned to the Philippines for an annual
vacation. Town educators gave him an unexpected HONOR and acknowledgement. During the festivites in INFANTA, he was
given a Golden Harvest Award being the "MOST SUCCESFUL FATHER." This reaping moment has served as the corner stone for role
models.
We now can say that Poverty is not a Hindrance to Education and Success. The poorest MAYO CLAN now carries
the FLAGSHIP of SUCCESS in the 2 neighboring towns, of DASOL and INFANTA, PANGASNAN; the PHILIPPINES !!!
In November
2000, the last group of the MAYO CLAN, the Gonzales, a family of 7 departed the Philippines to join the rest of the MAYOs
in GUAM. A year later, they relocated to Main Land USA and ultimately settled in the City of Phoenix, Grand
Canyon State of Arizona. Thanks God for granting our dear father Emilio's fervent request.
He longed and wished
to have all of his children come to the same category, to experience the American Way, and to dwell in the Land of the
Milk and Honey. God Bless the MAYOs and their supporters....
Success has finally achieved, Truly deserved. ********************************************
